How to Paint Natural Aluminum

While aluminum is soaring in popularity due to its combination of attractive properties, it can pose some problems to paint. Avoid the pitfalls with this handy guide that shows you how.

Lightweight, strong and resistant to corrosion aluminum is a popular choice for railings, gates, window and door frames, ducting, furniture and more.  It has a smooth surface which reacts to air to form a thin powdery layer of oxidation – a surface that is difficult for paint to adhere to.  Follow these steps to successfully coat the surface.

Ensure the surface is clean and free from dirt, grease, etc.  If white corrosive deposit is present, lightly sand to smooth and remove. Scrub with a non-metallic scouring pad or abrasive. Wipe entire surface with methylated spirits frequently changing the cloth to thoroughly remove all grease and deposits.

Prime all bare metal with 1 coat Super Grip Premium Problem-Solving Primer and allow to dry thoroughly.

Use Ulttima Plus Porch & Patio, Satin or Gloss Emulsion paints or Pro Speed Cover Gloss (available in white only). For smooth finish recommend spray application or use foam roller or sleeve with a light/ short nap of ½ ” or less.
