At Harris Paints, we remain committed to promoting sustainability and environmental stewardship through our business practices. Our high-quality paints and emulsion technology are a testimony to this as they are designed not just for superior performance, but also to minimize environmental impact and provide healthier interior spaces.
During our 50th anniversary celebrations, held during November 2022, we looked back with pride on our history and progress with eco-friendly products and green manufacturing processes. In continuing our efforts in sustainability, we recognized that preserving our natural world for future generations requires a multifaceted approach, driven by passionate experts in the field, and so in honour of our milestone anniversary, we have proudly introduced the Robert L. Jones, Harris Paints Environmental Grant – an annual grant aimed at bolstering the scientific endeavors and graduate-level education in natural resource and environmental management, to the prestigious Centre for Resource Management and Environmental Studies (CERMES) at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus.
Fittingly named after our former Chairman, Robert L. Jones, an avid environmentalist who so generously matched our contribution to provide a total grant award of BBD $40,000, the Robert L. Jones, Harris Paints Environmental Grant, supports passion and commitment to sustainable causes by way of financial aid as well as funding for important research at this world-class institution. We are certainly proud to be able to lend our support to the very people tasked with addressing the environmental challenges facing our planet and as we know this is no small feat, the flexibility in its structure allows our grant to provide financial support, wherever there is greatest need.
In its inaugural year, the Robert L. Jones, Harris Paints Environmental Grant provided scholarships and critical research funding to three students - Kerstin Corbin and Dina Hinds, who hold specialties in Tropical Coastal and Marine Resource Management and Shernise Mayers-Springer, whose interest is in Climate Change. Another exciting venture funded through our grant is the purchase of a cutting-edge Mavic 3 drone with a multi-spectral camera for the CERMES department. This incredible tool can capture data invisible to the naked eye and its application will be tremendously useful in areas relative to the research - from helping to optimize crop yields and identifying disease in the farming sector, to assisting coastal zone managers in better understanding changes in coastal vegetation and wetlands, and more, access to such state-of-the-art technology gives CERMES researchers a powerful new capability for gathering information and insight.
In the coming academic year 2024-2025, the Robert L. Jones, Harris Paints Environmental Grant welcomes applicants in the MSc Programme in Natural Resources and Environmental Management (NAREM) and the MPhil/ PhD programmes, to student nationals of Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados, Belize, the Commonwealth of Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Montserrat, St Kitts & Nevis, Saint Lucia, St. Maarten, St. Vincent & the Grenadines and Suriname.
We here at Harris Paints have deep admiration and respect for the incredibly important work being done at The University of the West Indies and CERMES, and we are immensely proud to lend our support and play a part in ensuring a sustainable future for the Caribbean.
By nurturing intellectual curiosity, easing financial burdens, fostering technical skills, funding innovative research projects and providing new and useful tools, the Robert L. Jones, Harris Paints Environmental Grant aims to better equip and empower those who, like us, are passionate about protecting our paradise for generations to come.
