Harris supports the 2011 Francophonie Spelling Bee Championship

The Annual Francophonie Spelling Competition took place on Friday 25th March 2011 at the NIC Conference Centre and by all accounts the event was a tremendous success. The French Spelling Competition is organized by the National Committee for the Francophonie, under the auspices of the Saint Lucia National Commission for UNESCO, Ministry of Education and Culture, and forms part of an expansive programme of Activities in commemoration of International Francophonie Day (Journee Internationale de la Francophonie), observed annually on 20th March. The competition was introduced in recognition of the fact that spelling continues to be one of the more difficult areas for students learning the French Language and takes place among lower secondary school students from public and private secondary schools island-wide. This year's competition brought together 18 secondary schools in an exciting oral competition conducted in elimination rounds with Ethan Joseph, a student of the St Mary's College, emerging as the 2011 Francophonie Spelling Champion. In second place was Daniel Saincilaire of the Sir Ira Simmons Secondary School while Jeanville Johnson of the Castries Comprehensive Secondary School came in third place. The top three places were all captured by male students! This year's Francophonie spelling champion was rewarded with a number of very attractive prizes including the grand prize of a Trip for two to Paris, France, compliments Air Caraïbes and the Travel Boutique. Other attractive prizes awarded to the winners included trophies, trips to Martinique, a bedroom/study paint-over from Harris Paints, desktop computers, a printer, a webcam, savings accounts, gift vouchers/certificates, a kindle reader, a hamper of seven seas products, French dictionaries, and free French classes.
