Williams Industries Hawkeye, skippered by Robert Povey, enjoyed an outstanding weekend of sailing to capture the overall title of the 2012 Harris Paints J24 and Offshore Regatta. Winning both races on offer in the J24 class on Sunday, Hawkeye rebounded from a sluggish start to finish the two-day event with a total of ten points. "It was a difficult regatta, that's for sure," said Povey after the weekend's racing at the Barbados Yatch Club. "But my crew was brilliant and they deserve this win. I owe it all to them," he stated. After an intense battle with the eventual winners, overnight leader Impulse, captained by Neil Burke, finished second. With a gentle breeze presenting itself over the weekend, the entire fleet was keen to gain any advantage that was to be had off the south coast of Barbados. Tactics then played a major role in the outcome of the regatta, but the conditions made for some exciting, close-proximity racing near the shore. "There were some moments when Impulse dropped the ball, but I'm not complaining, it worked out for us," added Povey. "It was a good day sailing and we're pleased." Local favourite Esperanza, with Ian Mayers at the helm, rounded out the top three in the J24 class. The Grenada-based Die Hard, under the command of Robert Yearwood, finished seventh overall and was the highest placed overseas entry. With a win and a fifth place finish on Saturday, Die Hard was in second place overnight but ran into mechanical difficulties on the final day of racing. In the Racer/Cruiser class, local boat Vagabond, owned by John Hanschell and skippered by Bill Tempro, finished first ahead of Mandy, captained by Bruce Robinson, and Jaystar, captained by Ron Hunt. TYCO, a 17ft catamaran co-captained by Ron Williams and Nick Knowles, recorded the fastest elapsed time 2:01.40 during Sunday's racing. Though not entered in a class, the Barbados Sailing Association allowed TYCO, the lone multi-hull entered in the event, the opportunity to race for time. The next event on the local sailing calendar is the Barbados International J24 Open Championships, scheduled for June 16 and 17.
