Keen Competition expected at Harris Paints Regatta

Harris Paints, the Caribbean Champion of Colour, has reaffirmed its commitment to local sailing through its sponsorship of the Harris Paints Regatta - the longest running event on the Barbados Sailing Association's calendar. Now in its 32nd year, the traditional curtain-closer for the domestic sailing season will be contested over the weekend of June 6th and 7th. Action gets underway in Carlisle Bay and will culminate on the South Coast in the vicinity of Hastings and Worthing. "For more than three decades, Harris Paints has enjoyed a productive and successful relationship with local sailing, and the company is proud to reinforce the link between yachting performance and the premium marine coatings that Harris Paints offers. Like our coatings, it is a partnership that has stood the test of time," said Ian Kenyon, Chief Executive Officer, Harris Paints. Several competitors have already confirmed their participation in the two-day event, including junior sailors who will also be competing in a dinghy class on the opening day of the regatta. The highly-competitive J/24 class is expected feature prominently, while some of the island's," best sailors will also be showing off their nautical skills in the Racing/Cruising and Multi-Hull classes. "From a spectator standpoint, both Carlisle Bay and the South Coast will provide a fantastic platform to take in the action, especially the South Coast Boardwalk. It is also expected that the boats will pass very close to the shore which will make for exciting viewing," said race organiser, Peter Burke. The 32nd Harris Paints Regatta will be based at the Barbados Yacht Club with racing in the J/24 class starting on Saturday, whilst on Sunday all classes will be on the water. Local performance handicaps will also be used for boats sailing in the Racing/Cruising Class. "While the J/24's," are always exciting, we are very much looking forward to seeing the juniors compete in the specially designed dinghy class," said Ralph Johnson, Chairman of Harris Paints. An avid sailor himself, Johnson is also senior vice-president of the Barbados Olympic Association. "The junior sailing programme at the Barbados Yacht Club is quite extensive and all children, regardless of colour, class or creed, are welcome to join this programme. It is our hope that through this initiative, Barbados may someday have sailors regularly competing at the highest level," (PR)
